Bob Woodruff injured in IED explosion in Iraq.

posted Sunday, 29 January 2006
ABC News reporter Bob Woodruff has been injured in an IED land mine attack in Iraq. I am sure the whole country will have him in their thoughts and prayers regardless of what they feel about the media and the war.

War time reporting is always a treacherous job, and in this modern day, where death and destruction are brought in hundreds of forms, it is even more dangerous. However, we must respect the efforts of those who put themselves in harms way to make sure that we back here in America get the true story.

From where I write, and report, I am like an arm chair quarterback. However, the articles I comment on in regards to Iraq are brought to me by a journalist risking his life to get a story out. When we read these stories I think we need to remember, these brave journalists, and reporters, are putting their lives on the line so that you have the true facts.

ABC News has the latest updates on Woodruff's condition here.

Woodruff is just one of hundreds of thousands who have either lost their lives or been wounded because of this senseless conflict. None of these casualties had to happen. But they did happen because of a President who chose personal revenge against Saddam and chose to cave in to his personal fears of Bin Laden as opposed to devoting all his efforts to the capture and trial of Bin Laden and his people. Bush's fears and hatred were so strong that he was willing to do anything, include lie and spread misinformation, rather than decide what was best for the country. He decided what was best for him. And that is exactly the sort of leader we do not want in power.

And while hysterical Republicans continue to challenge any kind of dissent in violation of the First Amendment and clamor for wiretaps so that they can monitor our every moves and keystrokes, more and more people like Woodruff are losing their lives every day. That are not as well-known to us. But they also have friends and family who grieve for them after they are gone. Nothing we can do can ever bring these people back. But we can work to make sure that such people like the Bush administration never comes to power again.

The fact that the environment has become so dangerous for reporters trying to cover the situation in Iraq means that the idea that we are somehow making progress is a total myth perpetrated by the Bush administration. We are part of the problem in Iraq, not part of the solution. Bob Woodruff showed tremendous personal courage in putting his life on the line to cover the situation, no matter how good or bad we thought his reporting was. In the future, we should not have to put people in this kind of situation except as a last resort. In the meantime, we have much more important prioroties that Bush is letting slip by the wayside -- priorities like solving the obesity crisis in this country.
