Gail Collins writes about the new drumbeat of Rudy Giuliani -- fiscal discipline. She compares him to Mitt Romney and says that in the area of that, there is a choice between Rudy, who had big ideas, but who never followed through, and Mitt, who is incoherent and unclear on where he stands. But when it comes to who talks about fiscal discipline and who actually did something about it, it was Bill Clinton who set the standard for the rest of the presidents to follow -- record surpluses and the elimination of the budget deficit.
The fact of the matter is that when the Republicans talk about things, the Democrats actually get things done. Therefore, they do not need to talk about how they want to drown the government in a bathtub like a Norquist or declare a major crusade against terrorists like a Bush. Let me give another example -- while the Republicans fall over themselves to talk about how tough they are on national security, the Democrats have actually caught terrorists. We caught and convicted the first WTC bombers, the Oklahoma City bombers, and the Atlanta bomber. We do not need such things as torture, renditions, or Guantanamo, because we can get results without them.
And by contrast with Clinton, Collins points out that when Rudy Giuliani came to New York City, the city was mired in a huge budget deficit. When he left office, it was even worse, and the government was the same size that it was when he first took office. And yet he talks about "fiscal discipline." This is the sort of thing that boggles the mind. Thus, this sort of sleight of hand is typical for Rudy and other such Republicans -- fail miserably at lowering taxes and cutting the deficit, talk about "fiscal discipline," and hope nobody notices the hypocrisy involved.
