The House has strengthened the government's Inspectors General by a veto-proof majority. This will make them politically independent, give them seven-year terms, and allow them to be removed only for cause. This will allow for more oversight of the governmental agencies. However, the bill is double-edged. Will it allow Howard Krongard, the current State Department Inspector General, to uncover frivilous cases of fraud and abuse for partisan political purposes in the next administration? He is already in trouble with the House Government Oversight Committee for obstructing efforts by State Department employees to uncover waste, fraud, and abuse in that department.
There should also be tighter safeguards against partisan appointments. There should be an expectation that a person like Krongard should not be appointed and that our inspectors general should show even more independence from the White House than the Attorney General's office should be. Otherwise, it will be exceedingly difficult for someone like Krongard to be removed from office.
