Speaking in Milwaukee today, John Edwards said that we should surge in New Orleans, not in Baghdad. Edwards hit the nail on the head, as once again, he showed that the Bush administration and the Republican candidates running for President have the wrong priorities. Despite all of the flowery promises delivered by the Bush administration and their enablers, the Bush administration has done nothing for the recovery of New Orleans; instead, choosing to continue his policy of perpetual warfare in Iraq and engaging in crackpot conspiracy theories over Iran.
Wars and conflicts start when one starts trying to control others and not cleaning up their own act. This is true at the individual level, and this is true at the national level. And Bush has taught a sick and twisted sense of patriotism, in which one is not really patriotic unless they support the troops. But Edwards, like his predecessors in JFK and FDR understands what makes a country great -- being patriotic about something other than war. FDR made us patriotic about conservation and preserving the outdoors. JFK made us patriotic about helping people in the 3rd world directly. And Edwards wants us to be patriotic about stopping the scourge of poverty in this country.
And New Orleans is our symbol of the Republican neglect of poverty and their contempt of those who are poor. Instead of offering to help, the Republican party thumbs their nose up at them and blames them for their troubles. This Republican contempt of the poor, exposed in its ugly form for the first time in 2005, is what started them in their freefall in the polls today. New Orleans is the direct fruit of their contempt.
