Michelle Obama on CNN -- "Politics is not a game."

posted Saturday, 2 February 2008

Michelle Obama talked today on CNN about politics. The problem in politics is that people like Karl Rove and Mark Penn treat it like a game -- something for which you have to do anything and everything to win. But if we are to change things, we can't do things the way that they did -- we have to stick to the issues. Therefore, we have to run WITH Hillary, not against her. If Hillary runs a positive campaign based on who she is and what her vision is, then great -- then, may the best person win. And the unity that was displayed at the Los Angeles debates, displayed the most when the loudest cheers were reserved for Wolf Blitzer's questions about a Clinton/Obama ticket, will only grow no matter who is the nominee.

But we must also draw out clear differences so that people can see for themsevles why they should vote for one candidate or the other. Rather than take stands or vote a certain way based on political calculation, we must be able to take a stand on the issues and explain why we are right.

The reason that Rove and Penn are so wrong on treating politics as a game is that peoples' lives are at stake. People are used as pawns in some gigantic power game; the arrogance of those who would see us as mere spectators is astounding. People are losing their jobs. Poverty is on the rise. Michelle Obama talked about the problem that she has balancing time on the trail with time with her children. She said that if she had so much trouble, then think about what it was like for the middle class to have to deal with the same problems. This is the sort of thing that stifles voter participation, erodes community spirit and participation, and leads to a vicious cycle where kids are not supervised and make bad choices. And people like Rove and Penn simply see it as some game.
