The sorry state of affairs over Iran: Condoleezza Rice and US envoy in Iraq contradict each other on policy.

posted Sunday, 12 March 2006

The Bush administration is in a sorry state of affairs over Iran. In fact, they can't even get their own policies straight and can't make up their minds over what to do about Iraq. Talk to any Bush administration official, and you might get a totally different policy statement depending on who you talk to. No wonder the Bush administration is totally impotent over Iran -- they can't make up their minds on how to deal with them.

On the one hand, you have Dick Cheney threatening to nuke Iran if there is ever another terror strike in this country and the Pentagon developing plans for a war with them. Then, you have Bush saying that we will not go to war with Iran and that we must stick to diplomacy. Now, we have Condoleezza Rice accusing Iran of being a central banker for Middle East Terror and that there would be no US negotiations even if Iran does whatever the Bush administration demands:

"Iran has been the country that has been in many ways a kind of central banker for terrorism in important regions like Lebanon through Hizbullah in the Middle East, in the Palestinian Territories, and we have deep concerns about what Iran is doing in the south of Iraq," Rice said, according to Ynetnews website.

Should Iran agree to drop its nuclear ambitions, she said, "that isn't a quid pro quo for anything. It just needs to be done because it's a demand of the international system."

But now, we have the US envoy to Iraq, Zalmy Khalilzad, inviting a meeting with Iranian officials:

In an interview with Television Network 'al-sharqieh' monitored in Ilam province, and replying to a question on the likelihood of a link between Iran's nuclear dossier and the security situation in Iraq, Khalilzad said "Iraq is not the place for settling our grievances with Iran."

"I have previously called to Iranian officials to start a dialogue with us over the Iraqi situation and I am reiterating such a invitation to alleviate the concerns."

So, not only is George Bush out of touch with the people of this country; he is out of touch with his own envoy to Iraq. Many of us saw how Bush froze up after learning about the 9/11 attacks. He is freezing up in the same way over Iran. He is so paralyzed with fear over Iran that he gives no direction at all and lets his people all do their own thing. There is absolutely no sense of leadership over Iran and no sense of purpose for what we even want.  No wonder the Iranians are laughing at us and thumbing their noses up at the opinion of the world.

And Bush is flip-flopping over Iran. A few years ago, he called them part of the "Axis of Evil." But now, he doesn't know any more whether they are part of the Axis of Evil or not. This goes to show how clueless Bush is when it comes to fighting terrorism.
