Tom Friedman: John McCain's pyrrhic victory

posted Tuesday, 22 July 2008

Even if it turns out that the McCain doctrine was right, it has brought about his own undoing as a Presidential candidate -- it now has enabled Barack Obama to argue that his 16-month plan for withdrawal was right all along. In other words, assuming McCain is right about the surge, that means that we have no more business being in Iraq and the Iraqi government is capable of taking care of themselves. Anything else, and it would smack of the White Man's Burden thinking that was outdated about the time of the World Wars.

Supposing for the argument's sake the the McCain Doctrine actually worked, that has created a new political dynamic -- more and more Iraqi politicians can now say that they can take matters into their own hands and that they do not need our "help."

“Americans are looking forward to the post-Iraq phase of U.S. politics, and Iraqis are now looking forward to the post-American phase of Iraqi politics,” said Michael Mandelbaum, a foreign policy expert at Johns Hopkins University. That is the reality of post-surge Iraq and post-subprime America — and any leader in either country who ignores that reality does so at his or her peril.

We are already looking towards how to bring Bin Laden to justice. Iraqis are already looking towards the day when they can defend themselves and fend off the extensive Iranian influence that was created by the power vacuum created by the deposing of Saddam. If the squabbling politicians of Iraq decide to unite against an imperialist America, then our end in Iraq will be bloody. We have a choice -- we can choose a peaceful end to the occupation of Iraq, or we can choose a bloody end.
